I'm a Helsinki based graphic designer and Illustrator. I was born in 1981 in the city next to Helsinki. I'm blessed with amazing friends, family and imagination. Combining those 3 makes me who I am.

ヘルシンキを拠点にしているグラフィックデザイナー、イラストレーターです。
1981年にヘルシンキの隣町で生まれました。

I started while studying Graphic Design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki back in the beginning of 2000. Slowly my style started to develop and now I've been working as an illustrator and graphic designer for 4 years.

2000年の初頭に、ヘルシンキのUniversity of art and designというところでグラフィックデザインの勉強をしている時に始めました。
少しずつ自分の作品のスタイルが確立されてきて、

I think it's important to renew the way of working every now and then. Maybe try some different approach to the style that you have.
I enjoy doing commercial work but I hope that I would have more time to focus on more artsy stuff too, like doing silkscreen printings out of my illustrations.
　　
仕事をするのに、その時々で方法を新しくすることは、大切な事だと思います。
おそらくそれは、自分の持っているスタイルとは異なるアプローチをする事。
商業的な仕事も楽しんでしているけれど、より芸術家らしいものにも、
もっと集中できる時間を持つことが出来たらと思います。

1. Who is Cookie Boy?
Cookie Boyさんについて教えて下さい。

1984年京都生まれ。2007年京都精華大学芸術学部テキスタイルデザインコース卒。高校時代よりテキスタイルデザイン、大学でシルクスクリーンを学び、上京。京都で開催したグループ展"La Pomme"にて期間限定のファッションブランドを立ち上げ企画、制作販売する。2008年靴ブランド「VEROTWIQO」、ネクタイ屋「giraffe」のエキシビションやパーティー会場にて、cookieboyとしての活動を始める。2009年恵比寿の天然酵母を主体としたパン屋での修行、酵母に関する研究を重ねる。
現在、様々な企画とコラボレーションを続けながら活動中。

Born in Kyoto, 1984. Graduated from textile design course at the Kyoto Seika University in 2007. Started textile design in high school and went on to learn silk screen in University. Launched a fashion brand for the group exhibition titled “La Pomme” in Kyoto.
Started working as cookieboy in 2008 at exhibitions and parties for the shoes brand “VEROTWIQO” and necktie brand “giraffe”. Began studying the science of yeast while training at a bakery using natural yeast in Ebisu.
Today, cookieboy is staying busy collaborating with various projects.

2. I am so intrigued with the concept of edible art.
Why did you start making art with cookies in the first place?
何にもまして、食べられる作品という所に本当に興味津々です。
元々、何故クッキーを使って作品を作ろうと考えられたのですか？

I liked baking to start with and used to make pound cakes and cookies for friends as gifts. I made a very realistic shoes cookie for a shoes designer friend of mine for his exhibition. People liked it so much and started asking me to make them for them. I was studying textile design in the beginning, but I think I am able to express my creativity through cookies as well and not only fabric. Besides that, I really like baked goodies.

昔からお菓子などを作るのが好きでパウンドケーキやクッキーなどを作って友達にあげたりしていました。そしてたまたま靴デザイナーの友達の個展のお祝いに、そっくりの靴を作ってプレゼントしたら評判がよく、そこから作ってほしいという依頼が増えてきました。もともとテキスタイルデザインを勉強していたのですが、自分のしたい事が布じゃなくてもクッキーで表現出来るんじゃないかと思って制作しています。
それよりも焼きお菓子が好きと言うのもあります。

3. Do you mind your work being eaten?
Taking a photo of your work before someone eats it must be important for you. What are your thoughts on that?
作品は、食べられちゃってもいいと思っていますか？その場合、写真で作品を残すことは、Cookie Boyさんに置いてはとても大事な要素かと思いますが、どうお考えですか？

I don’t mind that the cookies get eaten. They’re cookies.
Because they are eaten and are gone, it makes me want to make more and more new cookies with new designs.
I’ve photographed all the cookies I’ve made so far, but only the ones I am satisfied with. I enjoy taking the pictures, like its my own collection.

全然食べて頂いても結構です。クッキーなので。
食べてなくなるからこそ、どんどん新しいデザインでクッキーを作って行こうと思ってます。一応、今まで作ったクッキーは写真におさめています。
けれど、出来が納得いかないクッキーは撮ってないです。なにか自分のコレクションとして楽しみながら撮ってます。

4.クッキー以外で、使ってみたいと思う素材はありますか？それとも、クッキーを焼く過程が大事なのでしょうか？
Are there any other materials other than cookies you would like to try? Or is the process of baking an important process?
Like the smell from the oven?

Because of the fact that my family does Nishijin Broacade and since I was studying textile, I love fabric. Even if its not edible, I would like to use it to make products in the future.
When the cookies are nicely baked, when the icing on the cookies go on smoothly with a matt texture, and when the finished cookies are all in a row I get very happy and excited. That why I make each cookies very carefully.

オーブンから出てくるときの匂いとか。
実家が西陣織をしていた事や、テキスタイルを学んでいたのも影響して、布は好きなので何かしら食べれ無くても将来プロダクトとして使って行きたいです。
クッキーがうまく焼けた時、クッキーの上に塗るアイシングが綺麗でマットな質感に仕上がった時、仕上がったクッキーが何個も並んでいる時はテンションがあがります。なのでいっこいっこ丁寧に作っています。

5. What sort of works would you like to challenge as an artist?
作家として、今後どのような作品に挑戦したいですか？

Fun. Surprising. Those are the things that I think about when I am creating.
There are a lot of things I would like to make, like a very very big cookie, lots and lots of cookies and 3-D cookies. I’m also very interested in doing an installation as well.

楽しい。驚き。などをいつも考えながら作っています。
すごく大きなクッキーやたくさんのクッキー、立体的なクッキーなど作りたい物はいっぱいあります。見せるインスタレーションにもすごく興味があります。

6. Are there any artists that you admire?
尊敬するアーティストはいますか？

No.
いないです。

7. What music do you like?
好きな音楽はありますか？

Nothing especially.
I like cheery music.
特にないです。
明るい曲が好きです。

Today, Atmosphere would like to feature the knitting artist called Jung Jung who is having her solo show at gallery deux poissons in Ebisu from today.
今回、Atmosphereでは恵比寿にあるgallery deux poissonsというギャラリーにて開かれるニットアーティストのJung Jungに注目しています。

1.Who is Jung Jung?
Jung Jungについてお聞かせください。

1970年生。子供の頃から、画を描いたり、針や布で遊び11歳の頃、かぎ針編みと出会う。武蔵野美術大学短期大学部卒業後、様々な職を経て

2002年頃よりchico,motherのデザイナーeriさんからの依頼で、クロッシェレースのアクセサリー製作に携わる。

2006年、フクシマミキさんと編み物チーム「knot」結成。

2008年、「糸編みプランツ」主婦の友社より出版。数回の展覧会、展示会、イベント等に参加後、

2009年12月に「knot」解散。

2010年、再びjungjungとして活動開始。同年、8月恵比寿0bject by gallery deux poissonsにてjungjungとして初めての展覧会、「vege」発表。

Jung Jung was born in 1970. She loved drawing and painting as a child. When she was at the age of 11, she started to play around with needle and cloths, then she met with knitting using hook. After graduated from Musashino University of Art College, She experienced different jobs and she started to take part in making accessory made by Crocheted lace in 2002. This was requested by the designer of chico, mother "Eri".

Jung Jung established kntting duo called knot with Miki Fukushima in 2006.
In 2008, "Knitted plants (Ito ami plants)" was published through Shufu no tomo publishing company. She participated in several exhibition, show room, event.

In 2009, Dec, Knot decided to take different road to each other.

In the same year , Jung Jung started to work on her own work. Currently, she is hosting her first solo-exhibition called "vege" at 0bject by gallery deux poissons.

2. Jung Jungは、何故レース編みというメディアを選ばれたのですか？
Why did you chose the race knitting as a media for you?

自分から選んだという訳ではなく、chico,motherでの仕事を通して、
eri さんをはじめ、周囲の方々からの反応のおかげ。
いたって、「受け身」な始まりでした。

I wouldn`t say I chose it but through the work at chico, mother and because of the help of "Eri" and people`s reaction, I started it in a passive way.

3.レース編みは、クラフトのイメージが強いですが、今回のブロッコリーの作品はまるで彫刻のようですね。レース編みとしての作品の中で新しい見え方を意識されていたのか、それとも手法ではなく、表現としてレース編みを選ばれたのですか？作品を作る際、どちらの考えが先に先行していますか？

Race knitting has a strong image of craftsmanship. Your latest work , broccoli, is beyond craftsmanship but is like a sculpture. When you make race knitting, have you thought about finding new way to see the race knitting or you chose race knitting not as a technique but the way of expression? When you make your work, which comes first for you?

どちらもyesです。いわゆる「レース」の持つエレガントで繊細、儚げなイメージにあこがれはあるものの、一方で、その中にある甘さがどうも自分のなかにすんなりと受け入れられない．．．なんともあまのじゃくな感情がないまぜになり、もっと不気味だったり、毅然としたレース作品を作りたいと試行錯誤している途中です。

Both are YES for me. I have been longing for the elegance, sensitivity or the fragile image of the race. But, on the other hand, I couldn`t accept the sweetness of it inside me... this kind of paradoxical feeling makes me feel like I want to create more odd and assured race work.

the theme of my exhibition this time is "vegetable". I have knitted the work as if doing a drawing using the strink which I died to the color I love.

ブロッコリーを彫刻のようとおっしゃって頂きましが、まさに、私の中では、1mmに満たないブロックを積み上げているような感覚があり、編み物というよりも、彫刻作品を作っている気分が大きいと思います。

You said to me that broccoli is like a sculpture. And that is exactly what I am thinking of. When I make this work, I had feeling as if I am putting block that is less than 1 mm.

4.レース編みは、選んだサブジェクト（主題）に対して長い時間のコミットメント
を必要としており、一個の作品を作成するにあたって、時間を使って作品を作るというのはJung Jungにとっては大事な要素ですか？

Race kniiting requires long time to commit to the subjcet. When you make a work, is it importnat factor to take time to create your work?

本当は、自分にあと二組くらいの両腕があれば．．．と思う時も多々ありますが、
たぶん私は、繰り返しの地味な作業に向いている方だと思う。

Some time, I wish to have at least two more hands to make my work...
But, I think I am good at work that requires humble doggedness.

それに、私は編み図を描きません。自分の頭と手が直結しているような作業なので誰かに代わりに編んでもらう訳にもいかないし、またそうしたいとも思っていません。仕方が無いので、こつこつやっています。という訳で、「大事」というよりは「必然」という要素です。でも作品を作っている時はとても楽しい。締め切りが目前でなければなお！

Also, I never draw figure for the knitting. Idea comes out from my head and is connected to my hand directly therefore I can not ask anyone to make for me. I never thought about it either. Therefore, I have to work on it little by little. What I wanted to tell you is that this is it is not importnat point for me but is just ten out of ten for me. But most importnatlly, the time I make my work is most enjoyable time for me. Not when I have deadline though!!!!

5.
刺繍するサブジェクトに関してお聞きします。
Jung Jungが、新しい作品を見せるにあたって選んだサブジェクトを教えて下さい。また、何故それらを選んだのですか？
I would like to ask you about the subject.
Please let us know the reason why you chose the subject of vege this time when you show your new work? Could you tell us why?

今回お世話になるギャラリー「object」の森さんはとてもお料理がお上手で、
お話しているといつも食べ物の話になってしまい、テーマを決めるミーティングでも結局脱線して美味しいものの話に．．．そこで、だったら思い切って「お野菜にしましょう！」と２人ですっきりしました！
The owner of gallery deux poissons Mr Mori is really good at cooking. And, when I speak to him, it is always about food and when I had a meeting with him about my exhibition, we were just talking about food!!!! Then we thought, "Why don`t we make vegetable!!!" that was the reason.

6.　今後取り組んでみたい事はありますか？
Do you have anything that you want to try?

雨にまつわる事。太陽系。遺伝子。その他色々。今はただ漠然と。
Things about rain, Solar System, gene and other thinigs. I am just thinking about it vaguely.

7. スタジオや、Jung Jungさんの仕事道具を是非見せて下さい。
Please show us your tools and the studio.

スタジオとは間違っても言えないような、自宅のコタツの上が私の仕事場。使う道具は主に、14号のレース糸用かぎ針、0.45mmおよび、0.4mmのかぎ針。糸切り鋏。竹指し。DMCの80番レース糸。ピンセットくらいかな．．．
The place where I work is on the kotatsu(small table with an electric heater underneath and covered by a quilt). You can`t say that is studio. The tool I use is hook for race knitting in size 14. Race needle 0.45mm an 0.4mm. scissors to cut string, bamboo ruler, race string 80th by DMC, pin set.... I guess
